An arresting action and song cycle that explores the inner-workings of a haunted woman and the time she has lost, performed through choreography, spoken text, and original song accompanied by live harpsichord. The piece re-codifies samples from resources including Victorian mourning practices, the Spiritualist movement, clock mechanics, paranormal television shows, YouTube home videos, Janet Jackson, Kate Bush, writings of Ben Marcus, and the films The Snake Pit and Dancer in the Dark.

I continually tried to type 2010 but kept coming up with numbers in the 3000's, so please feel free to celebrate whatever year my brain wants to type or whatever year you wish to celebrate. Happy Happy!

I've got some fantastic things coming up this year and I'm jazzed to be working with such talented people and great organizations.

Right now I'm intensely rehearsing Brian Torrey Scott's play, Decline of Ballooning three nights a week with the most fun cast - they truly brighten my day and turn everything bad upside down. I'm still figuring out my character, Amelia as we're off book as of Saturday and BTS is known to lubricate the oils of the brain and twist your brain around like some fierce lemonade. It's a riot. And I'm trilled to have such an odd, strong role that has me playing the "straight" while tremendously ridiculous physical things happen to me.

I'm also almost at the mid-way point of the developing stage for my residency at Links Hall. I've got the first 4 vignettes ready to be tinkered with these next few weeks to tune-up for the January 16th Work In Progress. After that point I am full-speed ahead with the creation of the rest of the piece (another 4 vignettes).

Good things in store.

Good News Comes in 4s

Some exciting news:

I will be working with former collaborators of mine, Brian Torrey Scott and Jeff Harms (from Weather Talking days) beginning this winter. Brian Torrey Scott will be premiering a new work, Decline of Ballooning at Rhinoceros Festival 2010. There are plans tentative plans to remount the show after Rhino and perhaps create a film. I am thrilled to be working with these talented men again.

MFA Thesis Lecture

Here's a short clip from one of the songs in last Friday's performance take of Vas Deferens' 1400 of anything at Heart of Gold. This piece is still evolving and will have many lives under the same name.

1400 of anything plays with the content of top-40 pop songs by changing the context in which they are performed. Heart of Gold served as our laboratory to try out what the audience responds to best. As our performance opened up with a bold rap Lil Kim song to a loud wall of noise, this Rhianna song sung to a high pitched "am I going deaf noise" was almost bittersweet juxtaposed with it's more raunchy approach at describing love and lust.

Goat Island Summer School

The task of this Goat Island Summer School assignment began with a walk outside and around the Loop in three parts, one with the point of view from the waist down to the ground, one with the point of view from the waist to the shoulders, and one with the point of view from the shoulders to the sky--each leg of the walk was a unique environment. We had ten minutes to write about our experiences with patterns, view point, etc. We were then assigned to create a 55 second movement segment, combining an action from all three walks. We then gave away our solo to another Summer School student and absorbed a new one from a student, although we were only allowed two 55-second rounds to collect their solo. We were then placed in another duo where we shared our new solos to one another. We were then asked to create an installation in a 23 in. X 23 in. square (with no limited ceiling space) based on our experience of our partner's newly collected solo, and our personal experience during the walk outside.

My walk slowly became ominous and felt as if the birds were warning signs of doom. Bare tree branches jutted out from the sky as if to grab you and snatch you up. The looming stormy sky added to the greyness that mirrored the city architecture. Between buildings, a metal crane fills the space of a ghost building waiting to be constructed. I therefore created black shadows of birds with wings disproportionate to their small body, with their feet replaced by tree branches. Inspired by a telephone wires in a train station, the birds are hung up by wires---leaving folks with the question of a suicide or a murder that has taken place. The desk lamp represents the crane and the towering light, now out of scale, simply lighting the birds nest (now wires) with an exit sign woven between the wires.

Myself and nine other artists have been selected to premier a new piece of work at the brand new Sullivan Galleries in Chicago. The event (entitled for now as "New Work") is curated by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The opening is scheduled for December 12, 2008. The show will run until January 11, 2009.

I will keep you posted as the creation process progresses.

With fancy condos and corporate places popping up everywhere in the city of Chicago, it's becoming more difficult to find where you fit in a neighborhood. Most of the time these corporations just can't beat the service and special qualities that mom&pop and independent businesses offer to their customers. But, when these businesses must crumble due to the economic conditions we face in today's society, a hole is left in the community. Chicago is truly becoming one of those places where you can walk around pointing to ghost buildings that were once a part of your daily routine and neighborhood environment.

The play that I am costuming for the Goodman Theatre is called, Gas for Less

by Brett Neveu, directed by Dexter Bullard.

The play is set in Chicago--with Chicago actors---and it's about a very Chicago place, Gas for Less. Some of you may have even been to the old Gas for Less station in Lincoln Square, and you'd for sure recognize it's neon sign.

Previews: May 24 - June 1

Runs Tuesday to Sunday, June 2 to June 22.

Ticket prices are varied.

All previews, $10 balcony - $23 main floor and mezzanine.

Costume Project: Oh My Soul by Nicholas Monsour

I am also a costume designer, and this project I am very proud of.

Enjoy the trailer for Nicholas Monsour's Oh My Soul. It is a film about isolation, despair, and the miracle of empathy. Starring Catiah Li, Gonzalo Escobar, Jane Hu, and Angelie Oo. The film is in Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Tamashek, and English with English subtitles.

See it at the Gene Siskel Film Center at 120 North State Street in Chicago on May 10, 2008 from noon-2pm. Tickets are limited, but free.

Nicholas and I have worked together since 2003 on Air.Tact.Light and again in 2005 on Discarded Landscape with Weather Talking, a performance company we and some of our friends created.

He also created the films for my one woman show, echo chamber.

And I also appeared in his short film, April is the Cruelest Month as a radioactive worker with his company The Center for Decorporative Research.

Chicago's Looptopia (5.02.08) was a rainy evening, but it proved to be an entertaining and unique one.

The television reception was slim--only about 5 channels got reception, and bad reception at that. A boxing game, Ghost Whisperer, a period piece about a man in a white wig beating his irregularly-small sized son, lots of commercials about allergies, an info-mercial about exercise equipment, storm warning announcements, and a show about Christianity. All up my alley for taste, but the true challenge was to teach the audience how to view the piece. Regardless, they all crowded around and were intrigued to figure out what I was doing.

The piece was the final one in the program. It was a rather intense version of the piece both soundwise and movementwise. Let me remind you that all the sounds from Surround come from a few simple sources: am 1920's vintage electric fan, the human voice, and a music box--all being processed through a computer and the vibrations of an electric guitar.

The piece features an original tune made up from the poem, "The Man From Leeds" (from the children's book Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark).

All movement is improvised and taken from a short series of movements that are abstracted, constructed and deconstructed, and come from a small vocabulary that exhausts itself.

Caption: Decoded was an around-the-corner performance mystery.

An event that made you stop in your tracks.

The piece was viewed in a much smaller, contained context with just the walls of the DJ booth to play off. And since the music was up so loud, text was lost early on in the piece, leaving room for only contained movement on an axis and gesture. It was a fantastic experiment for the piece that, I believe, informed it a great deal.

Tif Bullard will perform her improvisational piece, Caption: Decoded from 8 to 8:30 to benefit one of Chicago's most important performance and dance venues, Links Hall.

THAW will take place at Sonotheque on 1444 West Chicago Avenue from 7pm to 2am.

Episodic and installation performances will take place from 7 to 10pm.

Tickets for this portion of the event are $30 & includes free beer & wine, food, gift bag, and all night access.

Tickets are only $10 from 10pm to 2am & includes entertainment by Mucca Pazza & dancing with a cash bar.

About Caption: Decoded

Caption: Decoded examines the intimate, yet distant relationship between woman and machine, most specifically woman and her television set. This performance analyzes the unique way in which humans must perform for their televisions. Using a live, but muted television as light, Closed Captioning at the text, and gestures and movements taken from the television characters and cameras, the artist will find ways to abstract reality and create cohesion through improvisation.

Surround is a physical performance algorithm that captures the expression of a series of spontaneous moments and extrapolates them into a labyrinth of sonic energy that ultimately controls and overtakes the body.

Surround premieres in an alternative format on April 25 at G2 Gallery as part of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago MFA Graduate Exhibition opening night rave featuring artist and SAIC alum, Suzie Silver.

The G2 Gallery is located at 847 West Jackson in Chicago.

Opening Reception is from 9 to 11pm. The event is FREE.
